The Conservatory at ATW

Why You Should Study at the Acting Conservatory

The Conservatory is the professional acting conservatory of The Actors Theatre Workshop, founded by award-winning actor, writer, and director, Thurman E. Scott. In the conservatory, Mr. Scott teaches his original acting and writing technique to both professional actors and students beginning the journey of developing into theatre artists.

Mr. Scott is a master teacher of creative process. He created a revolutionary acting, writing, and creative process technique that he teaches to adults and children at ATW. Socialization and the global embrace of technology can suppress individual expression — Thurman E. Scott’s creative process technique gives individuals the tools to reclaim their unique, original essence.

The Acting Conservatory Experience at ATW

Students learn exercises to develop their imaginations and free their emotional expression in a safe, creative surrounding, and then exercise their spontaneous creativity in a disciplined structure. The technique liberates individuals’ talent, supports them to make the best of the many choices available, and helps them develop their full potential. Students learn to express their unique creative insights, illuminating the important issues our society is confronting. This creates a feeling of empathy in the audience that can evolve into inspiration to take actions based on their new-found understanding.

The Conservatory is a place for students to learn, create, and grow with empowerment and security as they explore and access a belief system within themselves. The technique gives them an opportunity to launch from there and perform any role or function, whether it be acting, teaching, directing, or writing. The Conservatory exists to teach the DOABILITY, not just the intellectual framework of creativity and acting.

Mr. Scott has proven over and over that creativity is the great equalizer and unifier among human beings. His powerful creative process technique changes the lives of countless individuals by empowering them to inspire and enkindle hope. It is what sets ATW apart from other theatre-based programs.
